Hedge Cutting/Trimming

Why do we do Hedge Cutting/Trimming?

- It attracts wildlife

- It keeps out intruders

- It provides privacy

- It can look beautiful when finished

When do we prune hedges?

We prune hedges all year round but are especially careful when cutting hedges from February to August as this is when the birds are nesting. If we come across a birds nest we will put down our tools as if we continue with the hedge then we are breaking the law under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Tools used for Hedge Cutting/Trimming:

- Secateurs (Small pruners that are good for trimming individual branches and thicker stems on plants such as laurel or others with large leaves and a less dense framework)

- Hedge Shears (Good for small hedges and reaching into corners)

- Hedge Trimmers (This tool can be corded or cordless, and you can also find battery powered versions. If your hedge is a long way from your plug socket, you’ll need to use an extension lead with your corded trimmer. They’re great for very large expanses of hedge, but they’re a bit riskier due to the fast moving blades, so you need to go slowly and take care. You shouldn't work with these if the hedge is above head height)

- Topiary Shears (Fancy getting creative with your hedge? If you want to cut them into interesting shapes then you will need a pair of specialist Topiary Shears. These are lightweight and can be controlled with one hand)

- Rake/Broom (To clear up the cuttings afterwards)
